SS DRESDEN - 17 MARCH 1893 - NEW YORK

SS DRESDEN - 21st MARCH 1900

In an article entitled 'Argentina Land of Broken Promises' by Michael John Geraghty in the Buenos Aires Herald, 17 March 1999, Mr Geraghty erroneously describes the DRESDEN involved in the Irish emigration to Buenos Aires in 1889, as the MV City of Dresden. From contemporary archives and for the historical record the correct name for this vessel is DRESDEN. As her propulsion was steam, her correct prefix is SS (an abbreviation of Steam Ship) = SS DRESDEN. This vessel was the second ship to be named DRESDEN. See Clydeship Database.

The Ellis Island Website has mistakenly described the DRESDEN as built by Bremer Vulkan Shipbuilders, Vegesack, Germany, 1889. From contemporary archives and for the historical record the SS DRESDEN was built by Fairfield Govan, Glasgow, Yard No 336, for NordDeutscher Lloyd, Bremen, and launched on the 1st December 1888. See Clydeship Database.
